About

Nhung Luong

I'm a Senior Engineering Manager at Techcombank in Hanoi, where I lead a Data & AI engineering team. My work covers the pipelines that move data, the knowledge bases that give it structure and context, the models and AI agents built on top of it, and the products that deliver all of this to business users.

Career journey

My path into data wasn't a straight line. Six years in accounting and finance at Japanese companies like Honda and Panasonic taught me how businesses actually use numbers — a perspective I still rely on today, leading teams that build large-scale data platforms on AWS and Databricks at Techcombank.

  • Auditor — VACO Auditing Company Limited
Performed statutory and financial statement audits for corporate clients, testing controls, verifying balances, and preparing audit documentation to Vietnamese and international standards.
  • Accountant — Honda, Panasonic
Handled general accounting, month-end close, reconciliations, and management reporting for the finance function of large Japanese manufacturers, working closely with business units on cost and performance analysis.
  • Lead Data Analyst cum Data Engineer — Honda
Bridged finance and engineering: built reporting and analytics for business stakeholders while developing the data pipelines and models behind them. This was the transition point from finance into data.
  • Senior Data Engineer → Senior Cloud Engineer → Engineering Manager → Senior Engineering Manager — Techcombank
Progressed from designing and building large-scale data pipelines, to architecting cloud data infrastructure on AWS and Databricks, to leading engineering teams delivering data platforms, knowledge bases, AI agents, and data products for business users across the bank.

Key achievements

  • Scaled the data and AI engineering team from 4 to 32 people, growing hiring, onboarding, and delivery structures alongside the headcount.
  • Built the data lake on a medallion architecture, organizing data across bronze, silver, and gold layers to keep raw ingestion, cleansing, and business-ready datasets cleanly separated.
  • Developed a Databricks-based framework for ingesting, transforming, and serving data between the data lake and the bank's surrounding systems.
  • Designed and delivered the migration from AWS Glue to Databricks, moving both data and pipelines onto a single platform.
  • Led the migration from the legacy data warehouse to the data lake, enabling the warehouse to be decommissioned.
  • Introduced AI across the software development lifecycle — from requirements analysis and data discovery through implementation, testing, and deployment — to shorten delivery cycles.
  • Built an internal wiki platform that lets teams create, publish, manage, and share their own knowledge bases — with an MCP server on top so AI agents can consume the same content programmatically.

Education

  • MSc in Banking and Finance — Sheffield Hallam University, United Kingdom
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting and Auditing — National Economics University, Hanoi, Vietnam
